RELAXING AND TAKING IT EASY CAN ONLY COME SPONTANEOUSLY [Continued from yesterday] There’s an old tale of a child who told his parents that he wanted to catch a butterfly. They went to a store and bought him the best butterfly net in stock. Then they trained him in the exact way to catch a butterfly and sent him out to go his work. He went into a nearby field determined to catch a butterfly using a net and a jar to put a captured butterfly in, the only tools his parents gave him. He raced around that field for hours and exhausted himself without having caught a single butterfly. He became so frustrated and disappointed that he began to cry.  [The same can apply to those trapped in a cycle of “religious or spiritual workaholism” which drives them into a “go-do-zoom mode” of abidance which further drives them to work themselves into a state of fatigue (though they remain in denial about that). And even when they do not find what they are seeking, they keep going to same source over and over to look for what they want.] Totally exhausted, the young boy sat down in the grass and wept softly. It was at that moment (at the height of his misery and suffering when he gave up the fight and became calm) that a butterfly flew up and lit on his hand. He stared at the butterfly and reveled in being able to see it up so up-close in all its beauty.  He so enjoyed the moment. Soon, rather than trying to hold onto it, he lifted his hand and let the butterfly soar, leaving it in the field for others to enjoy, too. And inside, the child felt as if he were soaring as well. He had gotten what he wanted, and more, by giving up all the needless work; then, what he he had been seeking suddenly came to him. When he went home and reported the day’s events to his parents, they were critical of him. He had come home empty-handed. His parent bought two more nets and took him back into the field and they had soon loaded up his jar with butterflies. They kept them in the house overnight but by morning there was nothing in the jar but a pile of dead butterflies, piled on top of each other in the bottom of the jar. They explained that is what usually happens and told him he needed to be happy about what they had accomplished together as a family. Eventually, when he grew into adulthood and had his own children, he took them into a field and they caught butterflies together and put them in a jar and killed them. And he explained to his children what his parents had explained to him: that’s just the way it is. He had become convinced that his parents were fabulous people and, by way of having been raised by them and taken on their values, he had also become a fabulous person. SOME OF THE KEY OBSTACLES TO FINDING THE TRUTH WHICH COULD SET HUMANS FREE That takes us to some of the key obstacles which persons face when their thinking and beliefs and behavior all call for a change which they never recognize. It is the notion so many have told me: that “their parents - if not perfect - still did a pretty damn good job of raising me, Floyd. I mean I’ve turned out to be smart and successful and way about average in every aspect of my life.” In other words, the obstacles of delusion, egotism, arrogance, self-importance, condescension, conceit, and a sense of superiority and supremacy will block persons from looking objectively at those who pumped their brains full of nonsense and ignorance and stupidity and insane beliefs. If one believes “my parents did a helluva job of raising me because I am a product of those loins and look at how well I turned out,” then they will never be able to objectively observe and change their distorted thinking and talking and behavior by seeing it and admitting that it has not served them well. And to brag about parents or to blindly defend parents is actually an act of bragging about and defending oneself. One need not fixate on hating authoritarians to observe them and then see the misery and suffering that they can subject persons to. And persons need not hate their parents to see the ignorance and craziness which they passed down to their children. I have friends who are professional counselors whose treatment plans has been shut down more often than not when it comes time for clients to look objectively at the key sources of their sick programming, conditioning, etc., especially their parents. Adults trapped in egotism and arrogance will typically place one or both parents on a pedestal and will never once in their lives look at those two people objectively. Why? Because egotistical and arrogant persons love the belief that their parents must have done a great job “in order for all of their children to have turned out to be so great, too.” Have you ever considered this: WHO specifically were the most influential determiners of your programming, conditioning, domestication, acculturation, indoctrination, and brainwashing? Parents who had nonsense passed down to them by a long line of people trapped in learned ignorance? An admired church official who was actually molesting children? A teacher not nearly as smart as her or his students? An ignorance-driven and corrupt politician who was a master of the con? A Big Name Self-Proclaimed Teacher / Guru who has made millions of dollars by passing along to his or her followers a load of pseudo-Advaita-Vedanta "teachings"? In years past during satsang sessions when I heard a totally delusional person spout some insane belief, I would ask, “And who told you that?” Have you had what Maharaj called “your own experience” to draw on? Have you tapped into your own inner resource / inner guru instead of accepting unquestioningly - with blind faith - whatever you’ve been told by so-called “authority figures”? Did any of the above persons or others persons fill your mind with beliefs which are screaming to you that they need to be purged, posthaste? There are so many whose paths I have crossed during the last 75 years who have been told that “you’re the craziest SOB I’ve ever met” and who take that as a badge of honor. What a challenge that presents to ever being free of the symptoms of the now-global Ultimate Sickness which Maharaj identified as “ignorance, stupidity and insanity.” No wonder Maharaj went from estimating that “only 1 out of 100,000 will ever realize” to “only 1 out of 1,000,000 will ever realize” to “only 1 out of 10,000,000 will ever realize.” So it is, but so it need not be. If one understands that freedom from the symptoms of the Ultimate Sickness is a prerequisite for being able to relax and take it easy, then one will understand that both can come automatically and spontaneously via realization. And realization is simply a state that is reached if one abandons all of the content of the unnatural mind and then abides under the auspices of the rest of the natural brain (as happens with every living thing on planet earth except humans).
