WHY MAHARAJ ABANDONED RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL VERSIONS OF THE ULTIMATE MEDICINE AND TURNED HIS FOCUS TO PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALING INSTEAD
The purging of the garbage in the mind is sometimes referred to as “the non-dual purification process.” It is complete when the “mind” is eliminated (which happens when the last belief in any concept or idea ends.)
Maharaj explained that “realization” refers simply to realizing that everything placed in the mind is parental-and-cultural-based nonsense and realizing that none of it is true and thereafter abiding in what he called a “no-mind,” “zero concepts” manner.
A consideration offered periodically on this site is this: “Is it possible that everything you’ve ever been told is false? Is it possible that everything you’ve been taught is a lie?"
"Is it possible that everything you’ve ever read is pure fiction, including non-dual pointers which are to be understood and then discarded, as happens with thorns used to remove thorns?"
[When I came across Bible-thumpers in the past who believe that everything in their Bible is supposed to be taken literally and that every word is to be believed without questioning, based in blind faith alone, I asked:
“So do you believe the creation story as told in the book of “Genesis?” The answer from those types is usually, “Absolutely!” Then I asked, “So which creation story in “Genesis” do you believe in absolutely?”
Typically, there’s a dumbfounded expression which crosses their faces, followed by, “What the heck are you talking about?” I asked, "Well wait a minute. Have you even actually read “Genesis” or have you just always taken the word of someone else who told you what is in there?”
Again, “What the heck are you talking about?” I replied: “I’m talking about the fact that there were two versions of creation which were being circulated at the time “Genesis” was written and I’m talking about the fact that the writer of “Genesis” - who was not Moses, by the way - included both versions because he had no clue which one was supposedly the true version. Didn’t you notice the second, less well-known version when you read and studied “Genesis?”]
Again, is it possible that everything you’ve ever read is pure fiction, including non-dual pointers which are to be understood and then discarded?
Recall the weather forecaster who tried to decide for his listeners whether they were going to have a “bad” day or week or a “good” day or week?
To believe the conventional ignorance (there is no such thing as “conventional wisdom”), namely - that only a sunny day can be a “nice day" - can corrupt your perception of the next rainy day and negatively shape your mood. Imagine, then, how such dualistic distortions can shape an entire so-called "world" view.
As for the view of what “the world is like,” out of the approximately 7.8 billion persons on planet earth, no two of their views of what the world is like are the same. Maharaj said, “You are not in the world; the world is in you,” meaning that what person take “the world” to be is simple in their minds, simply pure fiction and distortions and delusions and illusions.
Dissenters say: “Well some concepts are beautiful.” Remember, Maharaj taught that all concepts take rise in you and you took rise from the dirt; thus, wherefore “pride” in the content of the “mind”?
Often recommended here is wariness regarding those who speak expertly of beliefs that were conceived originally via the fanciful imaginations of humans. What is dogma other than that? What is the obsequious content of a speech by a sycophantic politician other than that? What is a cataloguing of a host of “spiritual exercises” that must be completed daily “forever” other than that?
In their stead,
the recommendation is to consider pointers that are in opposition to such
flights of fancy and that are reports of direct realizations and inner
recognitions of truth (rather than outer claims about truth which are always
false).
Full realization comes to those who experience a peripetia and see that it’s all nonsense . . . all just so much learned ignorance. When all nonsense goes, truth comes, awareness of Reality and reality comes, Love comes. And belief in any and all concepts goes.
Floyd, it seems to me you present Maharaj as inerrant in all he said and wrote. That all his statements were "true" and appropriate for each particular situation and that if there is any inconsistency, it is caused by a faulty interpretation of Maharaj. Exactly like the Fundamentalists view the Bible. Am I correct in this observation?
Floyd: First, Maharaj wrote nothing. As for your question, though, you have already been provided pointers that would answer the question you raise, if you were to transfer the point and find how it applies here.
What Maharaj shared, he shared as a result of his own inner awareness and thereby led seekers to the discarding of beliefs. The fundamentalist group (a group that has FUN DAMNING anything that is MENTAL) with which you are comparing him speak only of what they have collected from outer sources in their effort to spread their beliefs.
Maharaj was not an outer source, and neither am I. He pointed toward the inner guru; I point toward the inner resource. Further, neither Maharaj nor I would make any claim about being “inerrant” or not, though the group you referenced does make such a claim about their “scriptures and teachings.” Maharaj never claimed to speak truth, as they do, and neither has this speck ever claimed to speak truth.
To the contrary, the message from the loft and the message from here is that truth cannot be spoken. Everything Maharaj offered was a pointer to truth, not Truth itself, so where is any possibility of being “right” or “wrong”? Quite different from the group you mention that claims their writings and words are inerrant, yes?
Here and in that loft, any pointers that are offered are "level-appropriate" so there will be paradoxes on occasion, but not contradictions in the long haul. Dennis Waite explained the approach thusly: “It is the perennial problem of the teacher to be able to judge where the student currently is in his or her understanding and lead them onwards from there.”
Also, “As ever in non-duality, pointers are graded to suit the level of understanding of the student, and it is no use trying to 'jump levels' if we have not yet grasped the lower level understandings first.”
Therefore, unlike the fundamentalists you mentioned, in a pure non-dual message there are never any statements such as “this is the truth” or “this is what is right” or “this is what you need to know because it is the truth”; instead, you might hear, “All of what you have learned you might consider unlearning.”
Your entire premise reveals that you are still operating from a position of duality, implying, “Surely Maharaj could not have always been ‘right.’ Surely he must have sometimes been ‘wrong’.”
If you were a student walking through the woods with a guide, and if the guide paused to point toward a bird that was reportedly extinct, would you proclaim, “You are so very wrong about that!” If you were to do so, the guide might respond: “Hey, it’s not about right or wrong . . . I’m just pointing, you #%@*&#^*!”
