The Shift in Yeshua’s Message
As for the message after returning to Jerusalem at the age of thirty, following “The Eighteen Lost Years,” Yeshu’a no longer offered the Jewish teachings but offered certain pointers from the Far Eastern understanding known as “Advaita” or “non-duality.”
For those calling themselves “Christians” but who do not understand that “Jesus” was offering non-dual pointers at the end of his relative existence, then they will miss out on the understanding of what some deem to be his most confusing statements and what others deem to be his most profound statements.
As with all non-dual guides, he offered pointers in a “level-appropriate” manner; thus, some of his pointers he offered to those who were still “asleep” so those pointers had a familiar ring to them (and to modern-day “Christians” as well).
To those that might be ready for pointers that aimed more directly at truth, he provided considerations that were steeped in Advaita.
Most Christian preachers and priests steer clear of those pointers since most do not understand his non-duality pointers, so only a few who worship with those leaders will ever understand the non-duality pointers he offered.
I met a Methodist minister from a church north of Houston, Texas that did understand the Yeshu’a / non-duality pointers. I was surprised to say the least; yet his sermons were as typical as those offered by ministers who had no clue about who “Yeshu’a” was and what non-duality involves.
I asked, “So you do understand what “Yeshu’a was really trying to get across to humans at the end, so why don’t you tell them the truth?”
He answered, because I’m still fifteen years away from my pension vesting and if I stood at the pulpit this Sunday and told them the truth, it would be the last sermon I’d ever be allowed to give and I’d be totally unemployable for the rest of my life.”
Some Background Information on Non-Duality
Some understanding of non-duality is required in order to understand the later message of Yeshu’a (a.k.a. “Jesus,” erroneously).
Advaita has been variously defined as a religion, a philosophy, or more simply, a set of pointers which share a message of non-duality (of the Oneness) and which point toward truth.
The primary point of “non-duality” is “advaita” (meaning “not two” or “non-dual”), that is, that “All is One” and that there is a unity beyond the wrongly-perceived multiplicity. The summative statement of Advaita is “I AM THAT; I AM.”
Let’s review the four basic methods of presenting the non-dual understanding (or five if you count “pseudo-Advaita”) which are available. They are called “teaching methods.”
[Were they of true value, they would only affirm the un-teaching / un-learning method. Whatever.]
TEACHING METHOD ONE:
Traditional Advaita
Paraphrasing Dennis Waite: This is the method regarded as the one defined by
Shankara in his discussion of the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita,
and the Brahma Suttras around the 8th century AD. This approach is
defined by those scriptures which some claim are the source of truth.
TEACHING
METHOD TWO: Neo-Vedanta
Paraphrasing Dennis Waite: The term Neo-Vedanta refers primarily to the method
used by Vivekanada and his followers.
Some critics consider this method a “watered down” version of Traditional Advaita, a result of the fact that Vivekanada and his followers have tried to make the teachings more suitable to Western tastes where concepts and ego-states have dominated persons for millennia.
[NOTE: Neo-Vedanta teachers typically employ seemingly sublime or exalted or emotion-inspiring statements that encourage followers to adopt more concepts and identities instead of encouraging seekers to forfeit all concepts and identities.
Some examples include such advise as: dream on an idea and be full of it and you’ll succeed; believe in yourself; make yourself strong; find god and gain power; use thoughts to create a new reality; engage in the noble goal of seeking knowledge;
you are responsible for
what you are; acquire power; and seek love. Such concepts are in direct
opposition to the teachings presented via the Direct Path, nisarga yoga
approach.]
TEACHING
METHOD THREE: Neo-Advaita
Paraphrasing Dennis Waite:: The teachers who use this method see no need for
study, questioning or inquiring into anything.
Recognizing only the reality, and knowing that there is no seeker, they conclude that there is nothing to seek and nothing to teach. Often, the result is that even the most diligent seekers who try to attain the understanding with Neo-Advaita teachers can become very confused. Neo-Advaitins suggest that no path is required since there is no “one” to follow the “path.”
[NOTE: That same understanding, which is attained by some who follow the “Direct Path Method” to its end, is assumed by Neo-Advaita teachers to be a given from the very beginning.]
Some who adhere to this method reject the name “Neo-Advaita” outright.
The Neo-Advaitin teacher might tell you that “there is no seeker, that there is nothing to seek, that you need merely to realize that, and that You will at that point be done.” Here, the Direct Path Method and nisarga yoga are offered.
TEACHING / UN-TEACHING METHOD
FOUR: The Direct Path
This is the teaching method employed by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, BY Sri
Atmananda Krishna Menon, by Jean Klein, by the author of this series, and many
other modern-day guides.
Later, there will be more explanation about how the one called “Jesus” may have learned the Advaita message. For now, certain quotations attributed to him will be offered and discussed in the next post and following.
[Please note: Since most of the quotations were recorded 80-100 years after Christ lived, none can be confirmed 100%; thus, they will be discussed as presented with that caution. Also, some quotes are from books which were among the 1000 or so pages which were in the original “Bible” but were removed by the Councils of Nicea.]
