"BEING UNCONCERNED" (I.E., NOT BEING EMOTIONALLY-INTOXICATED)
[Note: Being “unconcerned” does not mean one should not feel or that one should not be caring and empathetic and sympathetic and compassionate.
It does mean that one can transcend the common conditions which come with the Ultimate Sickness and which the masses are plagued with most of the time, including being worried, paranoid, disturbed, perturbed, apprehensive, burdened, distressed, troubled, and / or prone to anxiety attacks;
thus, to the "realized," to be unconcerned is to be free of the emotional intoxication which marks and mars the relative existence of most persons among the masses.]
" . . . Watch all, unconcerned, in the full light of clarity and understanding."
[Consider this exchange in light of being unconcerned:]
Q.: "In your daily life are you always conscious of your real state?"
M.: "Neither conscious, nor unconscious. I do not need convictions. I live on courage. Courage is my essence, which is love of life. I am free of memories and anticipations, unconcerned with what I am and what I am not."
"I am not concerned either with 'what exists' or with 'who exists'. I take my stand beyond, where I am both and neither,"
and
"I am not concerned with the universe. Let it be or not be. It is enough if I know myself."
Q.: "Even when I have an intuitive understanding of this, what is this reluctance to give up all that I am not?"
M.: "You have not stabilized firmly in that understanding. Your conviction should be such that no question at all should arise in the future about that. For example, a person is dead and has been cremated; it is all over. Is there any question about that? Like that, it will be all over."
M.: "I have no individuality. I have assumed no pose as a person. Whatever happens in the manifest consciousness happens."
Q.: "Maharaj said that he is not going to die?"
M.: "How can one who is not born, die? When people first learned about this illness, those who have affection for me came to talk to me or wrote to me, giving advice and medicine. Whatever is to happen will happen. I have no interest. I don't have fear so I don't have to do anything."
"It is quite in order that those who have affection for me to write and come to discuss things with me. [But] I don't listen to them, and that is also quite in order, because I am not afraid of anything."
THE ULTIMATE SICKNESS AND THE ULTIMATE MEDICINE
"When you are not well, you go to a physician who tells you what is wrong and what is the remedy."
"If you have confidence in [the physician], it makes things simple: you take the medicine, follow the diet restrictions and get well. But if you do not trust [the physician], you may still take a chance, or you may study medicine yourself! In all cases, it is your desire for recovery that moves you, not the physician."
"The thoughts and deeds depend on the conditioning received right from the time the consciousness is there."
"This Sickness gave the confirmation that there is no personality, no individual. Sickness to whom? [The Ultimate] Sickness is part of the functioning of the entire manifest, dynamic Chaitanya (consciousness); it is the play of consciousness. My true state is prior to this consciousness. That state does not depend on the consciousness."
[The Ultimate Medicine] can "give the confirmation that there is no personality, no individual."
"This Sickness is an aspect of the consciousness and I am not the consciousness. I am not the 'I Amness'. Whatever sickness is there is in the domain of consciousness. With the aid of consciousness, sickness is being experienced."
[The Ultimate Sickness is] "an aspect of the consciousness" and "in the domain of consciousness."
"Just as the sun sets, only when this consciousness sets will there be perfect health or no experience of this Sickness."
"Why should consciousness, which is inadequacy, which is sickness, be there at all? To a jñani, consciousness has not happened at all. If the consciousness tries to understand itself, it gets stabilized in due course in the Absolute. And when the consciousness gets stabilized in the Absolute, it knows it is like a ghost. It is not real. It is not palpable."
"Surely, when you are hungry you need food and when sick you need medicine."
"The description and causation are the remedy for a disease [a Sickness] caused by obtuseness and stupidity. Just like a deficiency disease is cured through the supply of the missing factor, so are the diseases of living cured by a good dose of intelligent detachment."
