Grasping a Clearer Understanding of Non-Dual Terms
BECOMING WHAT YOU ARE (continued)
To review from yesterday: A commonplace but totally nonsensical phrase used by many involved with “(distorted) non-duality” can be heard or read when they tell seekers how to “become what you are.”
Last night I was watching a film entitled “Italy: Made with Love” which features many of the Italian artisans whose ancestors first began practicing their crafts some 1800 or more years ago.
One trade was founded on the island of Murano - located north of Venice in the Lugana Veneta - in the 5th and 7th centuries by artisans whose descendants, century after century, continued to perfect their family’s artistic skills. They reached peak performance by the late 1200’s and continue the glassblowing to this day.
When I owned a European tour company, I warned my clients to avoid the glassware being sold in the shops in Venice because much of it was usually junk imported from China.
I also let them know that they were welcome to take the free tours of some of the glass blowing factories in Murano but to be prepared for a hard sale;
moreover, the tour guides taking groups to the island are in no rush to return tourists to Venice because they receive a commission on any glass purchased by those whom the guides boated out to the factories.
That said, some of the artisans create most excellent works of art, expensive though they may be.
[While far above typical prices, a glass sculpture by Thomas Stearns became the most expensive piece of Murano glasswork ever sold when it fetched $737,000 at Wright in 2018. Originally estimated between $300,000 and $500,000, Stearns completed the sculpture “La Sentinella di Venezia (The Sentinel of Venice)” in 1962.
Observant James Bond fans might recognize the Venini factory from one of the 007 movies.)
I enjoyed seeing in the film watched last night some of the locals I met when in Murano during scores of trips to Venice.
As I watched the film last night, I imagined the reaction
Vinini would have given if someone had entered his shop with one of his most
beautiful flower vases . . .
. . . which had been purchased earlier and said:
“Salve, signore. Buona giornata.” Vinini may have answered, “Good day to you too, Signore. How may I help you?”, only to have the man holding one of his vases say,
“I’d like to leave this with you and ask you, if you will, to make this into a Vinini vase.”
If Vinini had not ushered the fool out of his shop instantly, he would have likely done just that after replying, “Signore Stupido, that already is a Vinini vase. Now get the hell out of my factory and stop wasting your time and mine as well.”
The same applies if one approaches a “realized, non-dual guide,” asking, “Will you guide me in my effort to become what I am?”
An "honest, realized guide" would answer, "That is impossible. Good day."
A non-realized non-dual guide might answer, “Of course. Did you bring your checkbook or will you be paying in cash?”
FINDING YOUR LIFE’S PURPOSE
Something similar might happen with those who approach a “non-realized non-dual guide” and ask, “I understand that you help seekers find their life’s purpose. Will you help me find my life’s purpose?”
The "con / guide" might well reply: “Of course. Did you bring your checkbook or will you be paying in cash?”
Yesterday, this was shared:
Maharaj said, “Living is life’s only purpose,” not “spending all of your energy for an entire lifetime, working and working and working to find some conceptualized “purpose.”
Most humans will not accept that pointer, but the deer and the fish and the birds - all with much smaller brains and far less intelligence - seem to be doing quite well abiding by that truism and abiding by it . . . naturally and spontaneously.”
Also yesterday, it was mentioned that Michael Bryant wrote about “becoming who you are meant to be.” WHO do such people believe might be the one to determine what each human is ‘meant to be’?”
When I’ve asked that question over the years, the most common answer has always been . . . “God.”
(The nonsense around the dreamed up concept of “Sacred Contracts” has also reinforced that false belief.)
Sometimes controlling, overbearing parents want to be able to define what they think your life’s purpose is supposed to be and to determine what you are meant to be.
For those who really do prefer keeping it simple - as Maharaj so often suggested - then understand that “living is life’s only purpose.”
You can go with that or you can enter into a lifetime of
religious and / or spiritual workaholism and endless seeking and endless going and doing and zooming.
