Grasping a Clearer Understanding of Non-Dual Terms
THE POWER OF NOW
Maharaj all along endorsed abiding in the now, in the presence. He said, “Past and future are in the mind only - I am now.” Occasionally, early on, he'd use the term "power," but not as the non-realized masses picture it.
Later, he would beseech seekers to ignore the content of the book I AM THAT and the content of all of his early talks and to listen to his most recent talks in which "power" played no part.
“THE ILLUSION OF PAST,” “THE ILLUSION OF FUTURE,” and NOW
Why abide in "the now"? First, that is the only “time” in which anyone can abide.
Among the non-realized masses, the past was not as it was perceived to be, so any focus on the past is a focus on lies, distortions, deceit, self-deceit, and misperceptions. Such “past focus” usually deals more with unmet desires more than anything else.
Also among the non-realized masses, the future will never be as it is imagined because . . . it is imaginary. It will not be as it is dreamed or imagined that it will be, so any focus on the future is usually a focus on impossible dreams and imaginary fears. In fact, “future focus” usually deals more with unmet fears than anything else.
My daughter once told me that the one thing I told her that helped as much as anything to alleviate her fears about the future was an invitation to list all the things she has ever feared, to look at the list, and to see that almost none of what she feared ever happened.
Then, I invited her to recall the future fears she obsessed over and then see that the things which she feared might happen at some future point were things which happened but were never on her list of things feared.
The point: most of what you fear will never happen, and most of what comes and causes misery or suffering . . . you never saw coming at all.
So what a waste of time and energy and what an avoidable interrupter of peace.
Moreover, delusion-based misery and suffering come with past focus and future focus since they generate “desires” and “fears” which are the two key driving forces of every false identity.
And since those identities are false, any fears and desires they generate are also based in the false, in the not real, in distortion.
THE SUPPOSED POWER OF NOW and THE ADDICTIVE PERSONALITY
DISORDER
Additionally, the wise understand that addictions mark and mar the existence of the masses, and what do addictions generate? An inability to abide in the now and an inability to set aside the past and to stop projecting about the future.
What is the connection with the power of now concept and the Addictive Personality Disorder and the chaos that brings?
Beyond . . .
the typical addictions to religion and spirituality and work and sex and nicotine and the internet and porn and money and shopping and gambling and food and drugs (both legal and non-legal) and alcohol and chaos (yes, millions if not billions hate “boredom” and become addicted to chaos) and seeking and knowledge (a.k.a., learned ignorance usually) beyond the hundreds upon hundreds of other things which persons become addicted to . . .
there are two addictions in particular which all of the non-realized humans on the planet are addicted to.
THE MASTER ADDICTION and THE SECONDARY ADDICTION
The master addiction among humans is a desire to control. That includes controlling others; controlling mates; controlling government; controlling what other believe; controlling other states and other nations; controlling the behavior of others; controlling how people think;
controlling what others believe; controlling what others eat; controlling the habits of others; controlling the weather (an ancient desire that has inspired praying for rain at times and praying for it to stop at other times and sacrificing and raping and killing virgins to please an angry Rain god in order to end a drought); ad infinitum.
And because the master addiction among humans is a desire to control, then what do humans believe is required to satisfy their master addiction? The secondary addiction which is a desire to have power in order to exercise control.
And it is that universal, non-realization-involved mindset which gives desirability to the illusion of the “power of now” and which serves as an enabler to the two most widespread addictions of all.
One can search the internet for writings about power and find 3,880,000,000,000 listings. One can search the internet for writings about control and find 3,300,000,000,000 listings.
Few concepts involve such extensive and even pervasive interest and few inspire as much pursuit among the masses who suffer from the effects of the master and secondary addictions.
WHEN THEIR MASTER and SECONDARY ADDICTIONS DRIVE PERSONS TO TOLERATE and IGNORE SEXUAL CHILD ABUSE
There was a time when I asked a Catholic acquaintance, “Why do you support your religious institution when so few of its members follow their dictates and so many disapprove of their leaders' inappropriate behavior but nevertheless sustain the institution with their prayers and attendance and money and allow that institution to raise their children and educate their children?
“That is,” I continued, “they tell their membership that they cannot use birth control (because they want more and more Catholics to be ‘born’ to expand the future membership and to put more money into the coffers); however, current research shows that 98 percent of American Catholic women have used contraception in their lifetimes and with nearly as many still using birth control if fertile.”
I continued: “And why do members still support the church when it has a higher rate of child rape and sexual abuse and physical and mental and emotional abuse than any other single institution in history?”
He said sarcastically: “I’m sure you think you know.”
I said, “Well, I do have a couple of theories. (1) Humans love to be able to do any damn thing they want to other humans, no matter how abusive and no matter how (relatively) harmful their actions might be and then get a clean slate within a week and move on, having been ‘purified and made right’ with God and able to repeat their actions again. (2) So strong is the human desire for control and power, and believing that the greatest power of all is that of ‘God,’ they are even willing to allow children to be raped as long as the raping entity can assist with their attaining the power they want in order to be able to control all that they want to control.”
[Haven’t heard from him in years. So it is, and so it should be.]
ENABLERS
So the desire to control is the master addiction and the addiction to have power is a result of wanting power in order to be able to control, and so strong is the desire which is at the heart of those addictions, enablers who are often otherwise criticized are given carte blanche when they reinforce those addictions.
So if someone (or 3+ billion someones) want to promote the notion that humans can get the power which they are seeking with their through-the-roof level of the Addictive Personality disease, enable away. And if an author becomes a multi-millionaire because he’s been able to inspire persons to buy and read his book about “power,” carte blanche tolerance shall reign.
