Grasping a Clearer Understanding of Non-Dual Terms
THE RATIONALE BEHIND THIS SERIES
Once more for those only now joining the site visitors who have been visiting here regularly, it was in September of 2021 that I first offered a different perspective on many words and terms used by so-called "non-dualists" that actually misrepresented the non-dual understanding.
For those following the posts since then, even more clarity might be manifesting now in regards to the use of certain bogus or misunderstood terms.
That includes certain words or phrases - passed off as being “valid non-dual terms” - which have been used so often that they are now being heard or read without ever being challenged as they would be by intuitive, rational listeners who would do well to pause and ask, “Wait a minute. Does that make sense in light of what I’m coming to understand about true, legitimately non-dual pointers?”
So let’s continue to look in light of recent revelations and possibly a newer and clearer perspective and understanding at some of the misused terms discussed last fall and see now how far they miss the mark in being truly-non-dual pointers:
“THE UNIVERSE”
Many so-called or self-identified “spiritual people” have bragged along the way that they are “different,” that they are “not religious” but are “spiritual” instead (as if the latter have some kind of standing or status which puts them on a “higher plane” than the former).
Many among the religious have been heard to claim that “God spoke to them” or that “God told me he wanted me to give you a message from him” (which is nothing more than an effort on their part to give more weight and credence to some personal opinion which they are about to share).
Those who criticize persons who claim that “God talked to them personally” will, nevertheless, quite willingly share some message or insight which “The Universe” sent to them.
One who spoke often of receiving direct communications from “The Universe” was asked, What are messages from the universe?” The answer?
“A message from the Universe is a sign, synchronicity, or deep inner knowing that comes from a higher power. You might call this higher power the Universe, God, Source Energy, or another name that resonates with you.”
Here are some of the means identified by some persons who explain how “The Universe” sent them messages and how it can send messages or insights to others who are awake enough to listen for them:
They claim that the messages sent to them by “The Universe” came when it made use of “recurring experiences,” “animals,” dreams,” “patterns of numbers,” “synchronicity,” “losing / finding / breaking objects,” “recurring words or phrases,” “pain or illness,” “songs, music, lyrics,”
“weather,” “unexpected meetings,” “emotions that are out of place,” “unusual or new words,” “smells,” and / or “gut feelings.”
Now “Spiritual Giants” might criticize others for that kind of “magical thinking” - which is all rooted in nothing more than learned ignorance and / or insanity - but those who claim to be in contact with “The Universe” and who claim that they receive special, secret messages from their pet dog or God or by accidentally dropping a ceramic bowl on a tile floor and breaking it are just as absorbed in magical thinking and learned ignorance and maybe even insanity as anyone else among the non-realized masses.
Some who asked the question, “What does it mean when the universe sends you signs?” have been told that “You might feel at times as if you're a newspaper caught up in the wind, being blown about with no clear direction. But if you start paying attention, you will realize that the universe is sending you signals all the time that show you where you need to go and what you need to do to create the life of your dreams.”
In touch with “dreams?” Not with reality and / or Reality? Hummm.
Again, let’s turn to one of the doctors discussed on this site and in the book SPIRITUAL SOBRIETY (namely, Dr. Jeffrey A. Schaler who offers professional insight into the connection between religion and mental disorders and, in the process, also offers insight into certain non-dual understandings).
He wrote: “’Psychosis’ refers to a way
of thinking and speaking. It depicts an apparent failure to differentiate
between the symbolic and the real. People are labeled psychotic when they refer
to mental representations of the world as if they were substantive and real.
Another example of confusion is the description of the ‘voice of conscience’ as
the literal voice of another being (known as ‘hearing voices’).”
“The failure to differentiate between the symbolic and the real may be
intentional (artistic license) or strategic (lying) or the result of a
cognitive inability to differentiate between fantasy and reality. There are
three ways of using ‘psychosis’ to refer to people speaking and behaving in
certain ways:
“a. Psychosis is used to refer to the state of mind wherein symbolic
representations of the world (and metaphors) are confused with the real
(literal) things they represent.
“b. Psychosis is an applicable label when one ascribes confused speech to something
else.
“c. Finally, the term psychosis is also used to describe abnormal speech and
behavior.”
“Schizophrenia is said to be characterized by hallucinations, i.e.,
self-reported imaginings. Belief in God is a socially-acceptable, self-reported
imagining. Another example of self-reported imaginings, i.e., hallucinations,
is the popular belief in the existence of angels.”
And another is the belief by some that they are so special and on so high a plane that “The Universe” is sending special messages just for them.
“THE WORK” / “DOING THE WORK” / “SPIRITUAL WORK” / “SPIRITUAL WORKAHOLISM”
Many so-called “help groups” or “self-help groups” or “step groups” or “reform groups” or “support groups” or “religious study groups” or “spiritual groups” have a lifetime of “spiritual exercises” or “work” that is be done by those who come their way and who report that they are on “a journey” to _____ (fill-in-the-blank).
It took me far too long to realize that to find the root of the problem which is within (especially within a mind which was the source of my Ultimate Sickness”) does not require constant going and doing and zooming.
Sure, I required a guide who had already traversed “the path” which leads away from (1) being driven subconsciously by “ignorance, stupidity and insanity” to (2) being freed from being influenced by belief in the learned ignorance I had been taught, to being free of the influence of the foolishness which my culture had normalized and which I modeled, and to being free of the influence of the insanity from which the majority of persons I encountered had been suffering.
What none need in order to be free is a person or persons to teach them more and guide them to learn more. What almost all need is someone to guide them through the process of being un-taught all of the ignorance which they had been taught and someone to guide them through the process of un-learning all of the insane nonsense which their cultures “normalize.”
