HOW RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL AND NON-DUAL MESSAGES HAVE BEEN WARPED BEYOND RECOGNITION
On one of my earliest sites going back even before I began to post on this site in 2005, a question appeared at the top of the page asking, “Is it possible that everything you have ever read or ever been told and now believe is false?”
The British writer John Heywood in 1546 said: “There are none so blind as those who will not see.” His point was that the most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know.
Nowadays, it can be said that none are so blind as those who are living in the delusion that they have the ability to “choose” or have “free will.”
I mentioned in a post last summer that I was working with a 69-year-old woman who called to tell me that her priest was “driving her crazy” with his “rudeness to parishioners,” and his “lack of gratitude for all of the work she was doing, without pay, for the church,” and his “rigid, ultra-strict attitudes and homilies.”
Then, “For the last several months, he has made me angrier than ever.” My laughter at that comment also made her angry. After she asked, “What the hell is funny about that?” I answered, “I might have the time it would take to reply to all of that, but I’m not going to waste my breath to respond.”
“Besides, the solution is simple: You are not at that church right now, so here’s the resolution to your crisis-du-jour. You never enter that or any other Catholic Church or any other church, period. Now, you might finally make a conscious choice about your next action. So, to emphasize: my suggestion is this: Never, ever, enter that church or any other church again. I’ll leave you in the silence to consider that.” Click.
Now Heywood’s observation can be expanded: “There are none so blind as those who believe in the widespread delusions of choice and free will.”
When he said that deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know, what do 2.4 billion Christians already know but choose to ignore? They know that they never choose to become a Christian, but that has never consciously registered with them.
Moreover, whichever of the 10,000 denominations they are now aligned with, they never chose that denomination. The majority of the people on the planet typically follow the religious tradition their parents introduced them to as well as the denomination they are aligned with.
A 2016 PRRI poll revealed that only 3% of the people living in the U.S. grow up without any religious identity and then join a religion later in life. They are the few that are seemingly “choosing to become religious and choosing which religion they shall join.”
And actually, investigation would probably reveal that most of those never consciously made a choice, either. They were driven by some religious person they wanted to get into a relationship with or by a crisis that they could not handle and reached out for help.
People know that they never consciously choose their religion or their denomination within that religion, but they have never once focused on that fact and realized its truth.
The same applies to nearly 2 billion Muslims. To 1.1 billion Hindus. To millions involved with Sikhism or Judaism, etc., etc., etc.
The same is true when it comes to which “non-dual tradition” seekers are following. Why? Because most never studied all of the methods and styles and permutations of non-duality which are out there and then made a conscious choice about which they would align with.
Over the years, when I discuss the “methods of teaching,” a very high percentage of the people hearing or reading that discussion admitted that they have never had a clue about which version they had aligned with.
As with religious people who never studied all of the religious traditions and subset-denominations before making a conscious choice about which they will align with, most of those involved in non-duality never studied all of the versions and permutations available before making a conscious choice about which path or non-path they would follow.
Most behave as did the blind men trying to describe an elephant:
Some who wake up a bit when reading the current discussion being shared here might conclude, “You know what . . . I need to go all the way back and find the original message offered in the beginning to really understand my religion, my spiritual movement, my non-dual journey, etc.
Impossible. Before any written codification came along, there were centuries and millenniums of people playing The Telephone Game with the message before anything about it was written.
So what might be done? In the last series, this was shared:
A narcissistic know-it-all showed up in Maharaj’s loft and started spouting the same-old same-old to try to impress his captive audience with the supposedly “profound” depth and breadth of his knowledge of all things non-dual.
Eventually, Maharaj stopped the man’s monologue and explained that he did not give a tinker’s damn about the man parroting gurus or guides or writers; instead, Maharaj said that he only wants to hear about a seeker’s own experiences and from one who shares only what he or she has come to perceive and understand.
Hence, Maharaj and other wise sages discuss an “inner resource” or “inner guru” which can be tapped into if one takes pointers offered by a realized guide and then enters the silence of contemplation and considers the pointers in depth.
Yet there will be no success in finding the truth until one comes to understand what Maharaj said (but what his translator’s expunged from the transcripts of his talks), namely, “IT’S ALL BULLSHIT.”
The channel to the inner resource will only open if one comes to realize the correct answer to this question: “Is it possible that everything you have ever read or ever been told and now believe is false?”
One must return to the blank tablet state before anything was ever registered in “the mind.”
