Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.
F.: You might recall this story that was reported in newscasts earlier this summer:
A teenage girl attempting to sail solo around the world was rescued yesterday in a remote spot of the Indian Ocean, bringing to a successful conclusion the dramatic bid to save her life. Sixteen-year-old American Abby Sunderland had activated an emergency beacon which started a huge search and rescue operation involving Australia, America and France. Numerous ships became involved in the hunt as well as a chartered jet.
The actual rescue was simple. A boat was launched from a larger vessel and picked her up from her overturned boat. The difficult part was finding where she was in a vast ocean. She was not freed from her ordeal until she was located.
Most persons are as lost as she. They do not know who they are; they cannot find themselves. How can they possibly be freed from their prisons if they have not found where it is that they are locked up and what force is holding them that they must be free of?
How can they be free of misery when they do not know the difference in "pain" and "suffering"? If they do not know the difference, what are the odds that they will use the proper medicine to treat what ails them?
Pain can be real, but misery and suffering are imagined. Pain is of the body; misery and suffering are of the "mind."
Maharaj said: "The clearer you understand on the level of mind you can be described in negative terms only, the quicker will you come to the end of your search and realise that you are the limitless being."
Recently, two e-mails were received. In one, Louise mentioned that she is recovering from a case of the flu. That which accompanies a viral or bacterial attack on the cells of the body can produce pain.
In a second e-mail, a man who has recently separated from his wife wrote: "Some are surprised I'm not relieved and that I'm having such a tough time with this. I'm surprised myself at the amount of pain I am experiencing."
In the first case, Louise has properly diagnosed the illness and knows what medicine is the proper medicine to bring some relief from the symptoms of the flu.
In the second case, the man has not properly diagnosed the illness and so he does not know what medicine is the proper medicine to bring relief. Only the Ultimate Medicine will work, but...
...he has become addicted to the medicine of talking about sicknesses, to the medicine of an external power, to taking medicine as advised by others who are sicker than he is but who are in denial and are claiming they have been restored to health, including physical and mental and emotional health. They have not. They are as much in their self-made prisons as he is right now but do not know it.
Douwe Tiemersma said, "In opposition to the restless mind, with its limited categories -- intentionality, subjectivity, duality etc. -- stands supreme the limitless sense of ‘I am’. The only thing I can be sure about is that ‘I am’; not as a thinking ‘I am’ in the Cartesian sense, but without any predicates. Again and again Maharaj draws our attention to this basic fact in order to make us realise our ‘I am-ness’ and thus get rid of all self-made prisons."
Again, how can they possibly be freed from their prisons if they have not found where it is that they are locked up and what force is holding them that they must be free of?
Consider the misdiagnosis revealed in the statements, "Some are surprised I'm not relieved and that I'm having such a tough time with this. I'm surprised myself at the amount of pain I am experiencing."
Maharaj: "After all, the sense ‘I am’ is always with you, only you have attached all kinds of things to it -- body, feelings, thoughts, ideas, possessions etc. All these self-identifications are misleading. Because of them you take yourself to be what you are not,"
and
"The only true statement is ‘I am’."
If the WHO doing all that talking is not identified, if the force holding one in prison is not identified, then how can one be free? If "I" is used to identify anything other than the consciousness, then that "I" - or the multiple "I's" - will continue to hold the key to one's perceived sense of imprisonment and misery.
"I'm not relieved." WHO (what non-Realized ego-state) is saying that? Not the consciousness.
"I'm having such a tough time with this." WHO is being referenced there? Not the consciousness.
"I'm surprised myself at the amount of pain." WHO is claiming to be in pain? Not the body, which can know pain, and not the consciousness, which cannot know pain. Only the "mind" can conclude that "this misery is real and I am experiencing it" or that "this suffering is real and I am experiencing it."
Moreover, WHO is saying, "I am surprised myself"? An ego-state, shocked that he has done so much self-improvement work and is still suffering; an ego-state that has told so many others what they need to know and do, but who is now seeing that none of that is availing him anything at all and who, if objective, would admit that it has availed them nothing either, long-term.
Next, "I am experiencing." WHO is saying that? Not the consciousness. There is no "who" to experience. If there are elements, air, and consciousness only, are the elements suffering? NO. Is the air in misery? NO. Is the consciousness in misery? NO. It is merely blocked. There is no "who" to experience anything, but the "mind" will hold dear all of the false identities that will churn out one belief after another about false concepts such as "loss," "less," "misery," "suffering," "pain," etc.
What to do? How to digest the Ultimate Medicine? He can search for the roles that are generating the thoughts and the words: "The Husband," "The Homeowner," "The Finance Man," "The Father," ad infinitum. In the process, he can find (1) all that he is not as well as (2) see that it is all of the "not-him's" that are churning out the perceived / misperceived misery and suffering.
For now, the Medicine can be administered more promptly if the focus is on finding out all he is not rather than trying to complete the entire "journey" to finding "what he is."
Questioner: "Then what am I?"
Maharaj: "It is enough to know what you are not. You need not know [at this point] what you are."
The tendency in the past has been to seek out the big name teachers and speakers, all ego-inspired: "I am associated with this crowd of people...the really important people in our movement or in this or that movement." The tendency has also been to talk with as many as possible about "the problem" and "the solution." Input, input, input rather than hearing a few key pointers that are then taken into the quiet for consideration, alone, with Self only.
And the key pointers will never come from the big names who have their own ego-driven, self-serving, false, hidden agendas.
Maharaj: "What does it matter, who is who? Your high opinion of me is your opinion only. Any moment you may change it. Why attach importance to opinions, even your own?" And why attach importance to the opinions of persons who claim to be one way but are not that way at all, persons who claim you need to be like them when, in private, they are nothing close to the image that they are showing when in public forums?
Give up trying to find more answers and more knowledge and engage in un-learning all that you have learned which is at the root of your continuing sickness.
Maharaj: "Give up all questions except one: ‘Who am I?’ After all, the only fact you are sure of is that you are. The ‘I am’ is certain. The ‘I am this’ is not. Struggle to find out what you are in reality." Yet for now, focus on all you are not, and stop following the phrase "I am" with any other words, including "separated," "father," ex-husband," "not relieved," "surprised," "having." The "I" consciousness is none of those. It just IS, for now.
So, to know what you are, you must first investigate and know what you are not. "Discover all that you are not - body, feelings thoughts, time, space, this or that - nothing, concrete or abstract, which you perceive can be you. The very act of perceiving shows that you are not what you perceive."
Maharaj: "In reality there is only consciousness"; that is, for now, for right now, while the consciousness is manifested, that is all that is real. All else is assumed - including all of the false roles assumed as identities - and none of that is real. In reality, those roles are not. They are imagined.
Next, understand that all misery is rooted in fear or desire. WHO wants joy instead of being willing to merely witness whatever is as it is? That is just a setup for more of the misery that is churned out by the ever-fluctuating "mind."
Maharaj: "...joy is joy only against a background of pain."
In the end, freedom - and then peace - come when all seeking ends. As much misery can come in the end from playing the role of "The Seeker of Joy" as from playing the perverted role of "The Masochist Who Seeks Pain and Misery."
The invitation is to tear down the self-made prison of the "mind" that is so focused on the false "I's." If he were totally honest, he would know and would admit that this is not about "her" or "his love for her" at all. It is only about "I, I, I":
"I am not relieved," "I am having such a tough time," "I am surprised," "the pain I am experiencing." All imagined misery and suffering begins with the "I," is sustained by the "I," and can only end with the end of focusing on "the lie of the I." Witness all from the distance so that attachment to false personas can end, bringing an end as well to the perceived misery and suffering that personas always make seem so real.
Either say and mean "To hell with this self-centeredness and to hell with the false 'I's" or continue along with the perceived misery and suffering they fabricate.
Otherwise, an objective witness will look at you as you push time and again against the bars of your prison, screaming out in agony and misery because of your confinement. But to the objective witness, you will look like a mime, seemingly pushing against bars that are not even there...believing that you are in a prison when what has actually happened is that you have just been freed.
You are free and don't even know it. What confusion. What a call for the relief that comes with a full dosage of the Ultimate Medicine.

The Twice-Stolen Necklace Murders offers the non-duality message by way of a mystery-adventure novel, discussing the movement from pain to healing to awakening to peace.
From Dr. R.F. Maley, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus and former Head of the Department of Psychology, University of Houston: "Floyd Henderson's book, The Twice-Stolen Necklace Murders, is a fun read and an interesting mystery, but perhaps more importantly it serves as a vehicle for blending Eastern Philosophy and Native American Spirituality to make an intellectually challenging novel. The book's insights into both relationships and authoritarian conditioning of people in our society make it a must read, tracing the roots of narcissistic, sociopathic and psychopathic behaviors to the very core of the culture. This truly witty and politically-incorrect study of the aggressive nature of 'the American character' offers not only a diagnosis but also a treatment plan, making the book an excellent supplemental reading in courses such as psychology, anthropology, philosophy, sociology and counseling."
