For five thousand years, the gullible / religious partnership and the gullible / spirituality partnership have both withstood the test not only of time but also of reason. How gullible were the parents who believed it when a priest told them...
...that the priest, as god's representative on earth, needed to have sex with their virgin daughter in order to appease the god's anger, and
...that he would need to sacrifice her by cutting out her heart and then drinking her blood and eating her flesh, and
...that he would also need to allow the entire community to eat the body and drink the blood in order for everyone to enter into communion with a god, and
...that if they did all of that, it would be likely that the god would send rain and save their crops, but
...if that did not solve the lack-of-rain problem, they would have to repeat the process with one virgin after another until it did rain?
How gullible are billions today who believe that the religious act of transubstantiation actually turns bread into the body of Christ and wine into blood of Christ and believe that it is sane to practice cannibalism and vampirism by drinking blood and eating body in order to commune with god?
And how gullible are people who believe that special crystals or special smoke or special humming or special clothes or special haircuts can make them "more spiritual" and can make them "different" and can make them "better"?
How gullible are so-called "spiritual" persons who believe that gurus from the West who assume new Eastern names can share any truth at all about authenticity, about freedom from assumed labels, about freedom from the phoniness of presumed ego-states?
How gullible are so-called spiritual persons who believe that teachers and authors are offering a "spiritual message" when they are offering concepts about gaining power; concepts about "benefiting" from use of the power of intentions or of now; concepts about using spiritual laws that can be used to become financially successful or to fulfill selfish desires;
or any of the other concepts which claim that the aspirations of relative-based ego-states can have their wishes granted by tapping into other-worldly powers or Supreme Beings or some Supreme Authority or Authorities that supposedly care about relative issues in "a world" that only exists in the distorted minds of the persons who are mistaking dreams for reality?
And how gullible are persons to believe that someone can teach them, for a $5,000.00 fee, some special way to use their minds to manipulate "the universe" and thereby control what happens on this planet, including the ability to attract specific people to them or to attract wealth and "abundance" or to develop the ability to repel illness and "negative" events?
Maharaj said that "ignorance and knowledge are in the mind, not in the real," so any use of the mind will not result in one having control over the universe but will result in ignorance and the belief that things false are real.
The Law of Attraction that is taught by so-called "New Thought" teachers says, "That which is like unto itself is drawn," but Maharaj said that "ignorance is like a fever - it makes you see things which are not there."
One of the "New Thought" authors touting the power of the mind over poverty, disaster, disease and other things "negative" claims that cancer and other diseases are curable if the patient has "sufficient courage, love and spirit" and that if the patient is not cured, it is because of the insufficient quantities of courage, love and spirit.
[Sound familiar? Remember the recent report on the couple arrested for allowing their daughter to die because they refused to take her for the medical care she needed to treat an infection, claiming they practice faith-healing and their preacher claiming that if a child dies even after prayers for healing have been raised, then god wanted the child to die. There is not much difference in "I can use my mind to heal illness" and "I can use my prayers to heal illness." Modern-day infections almost always require an antibiotic for healing. Neither prayers nor courage nor love nor spirit nor faith treat bacterial infections.]
When Larry King interviewed one of the persons claiming that the mind can control the universe, he asked, "If the Universe manifests abundance at a mere thought, why is there so much poverty, starvation, and death?"
It was noted that (1) the anecdotal accounts presented by such "New Thought" teachers are about people who live in cultures that have paths which allow people to overcome adversity but that (2) such paths are not available to the majority of the people on the planet.
How gullible, and how absent of compassion, one would have to be to suggest - as a U.S. religious leader did - that the earthquake that devastated Haiti was caused as a result of a curse placed on the people there decades before by god;
and how gullible and how absent of compassion "New Thought" teachers are to suggest that the earthquake and the subsequent suffering of the Haitians was brought about because they were not using their collective minds properly or because they - as a people - did not have enough courage or love or spirit.
Yet this package of nonsensical, magical thinking is being sold to hundreds of thousands of persons, and books with the same message are being sold to millions, because the non-Realized masses love magical thinking, love to be emotionally-intoxicated, love the idea of having power and control, and love to think they are having spiritual experiences that lift them above the realm of the "common masses."
Maharaj said that he did not "feel the need to take myths for reality" and that "I am only interested in ignorance and freedom from ignorance," but the facts show that the masses do take myth for reality, that they are trapped in ignorance, and that they are not the least bit interested in freedom from ignorance.
The Advaita teachings are about de-accumulation, not about accumulation. Read hundreds or thousands of modern books, and accumulate more and more ideas and concepts and beliefs, but the fact is that you will be engaging in a process that will prevent Realization rather than one that is designed to strip away concepts and make way for seekers to move to the end of the “path.”
