An Advaita forum focusing on Realisation, enlightenment, non-duality, Real Love, peace, freedom, Your original nature, abiding naturally, the Oneness, the Nothingness, and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Here, there is nothing that is believed, so there is no one here who wants you to believe anything, either. Here, the invitation is to be free of all that you have been programmed, conditioned, acculturated, and domesticated to believe so that you can be free, period.

F.: To continue with the discussion of some of the newer obstacles to Realization:

Another obstacle is the willingness among non-Realized persons to pay a small fortune to one of the modern-day snake oil salespeople who claim that they can teach persons how they can use the mind to control what some take to be the controlling force of the universe, making such persons more powerful than "the force of the universe" by giving them the power to control with their minds "The Controller" or "The Controlling Force of the Universe."

While the mind originally evolved as an aid to the perpetuation of the human species, it has since become an instrument of misery and suffering and distortion and destruction. [For the full explanation, you may see the book entitled "There's No Such Thing as Peace of Mind (There Is Only Peace If You Are Out of Your Mind")]

To buy into the concept that there is some definable force with the power and the willingness to intervene in relative affairs and to grant any and every selfish request that personas can desire is to buy into the power of snake oil.

SNAKE OIL :The Background
Oil extracted from the Chinese Water Snake has long been used by the Chinese to treat physical pain, but the term as used here refers to the derogatory connotation that associates snake oil with medicinal quackery or with embellished advertising claims that are made without the slightest confirmable benefit.

While some placebo effect might be reported in anecdotal accounts, there is no verifiable basis in fact to any of the claims being made by those teachers and authors who are presently-popular in the "Law of Attraction" movement.

Their product amounts to nothing more than a modern-day version of snake oil, including claims that - via the proper use of the mind - you can make someone love you, you can attract wealth, you can ward off illness (and if you do become ill, it's your own fault, as is poverty).

Should it not be asked how it was, therefore, that three persons died in a sweat lodge that was organized by one of these "New Thought" gurus? What was the flaw in their training that allowed their minds to bring about that fate? And why did the mind of the guru not prevent those deaths? Or is all of that another one of his "Secrets" ?

In the Western movies that were viewed here during childhood, one stock character was the man who roamed from town to town, peddling his "medicine oil" (a.k.a., snake oil) which he touted as a panacea, capable of treating "all that ails you."

Usually, the fraudulent peddler would plant a collaborator in the audience who would offer a "personal testimony" about the peddler's claims in order to increase sales. Such con artists were called grifters (who were also drifters because they had to be far away in another town before the buyers realized they had bought something that was pure rubbish.)

Today, the new grifters are authors and lecturers who are selling people a modernized version of the snake oil made popular in the 1900's in the U.S. (see yesterday's post for specific titles of those teachings). Nowadays, these modern-day grifters also have "plants in the audience," people willing to testify to the fact that one of the famous teachers taught them to use their minds to make the universe give them what they wanted. Many are so delusional that they cannot see or admit that they bought something that is pure rubbish.

The phrase "The Law of Attraction," used widely by so-called "New Thought" writers and lecturers (a.k.a., "The New Grifters") refers to the idea that thoughts can influence chance. So on one hand, everything that happens - right down to the smallest detail - is happening because there is some force in the universe that can control everything...that has an overall plan...that causes any happening to happen as a piece in some global / universal design.

Yet on the other hand, "The Law of Attraction" also claims, contradictorily, that the plan or design can be altered by you simply through the use of your mind. That teaching argues that thoughts (both conscious and unconscious) can affect things outside the head, not just through motivation but by other means. So which is it? "Chance"? or "Controlled"? or the really senseless oxymoron, "Controlled Chance"?

[NOTE: Billions of Christians and Muslims and Jews who mock this movement are really very much a part of it, believing that there is a "Divine Plan" but also believing that, via the power of prayer, they can bend the plan to their desires.]

By the way, the Law of Attraction claim is not that positive thoughts can generate a "new winning attitude" that can allow you to be successful through your own industrious efforts. The claim is that it's much simpler than that.

This scheme is not about your developing an attitude or work habits that can allow you to earn that which you desire but is about you drawing success, fame, people, wealth, power, control, etc. to you through no more effort than focusing your thoughts on what you would have the universe give. [See how James Randi exposed Uri Geller's lie that he could bend spoons with his mind and how Randi exposed Peter Popoff's "faith healing" scheme.]

The claim is that "the universe" will manifest abundance for you if you but use your mind properly to draw to yourself loads of whatever you desire. The Advaita understanding is that abundance is a source of misery and suffering and that freedom comes via de-accumulation.

WHO (what ego-state) wants abundance? WHO (what ego-state) that can afford to pay a modern-day grifter the sum of $5,000.00 to learn how one's mind can supposedly control the universe needs even more abundance? If someone can toss down $5,000.00 for such nonsense, then abundance is obviously already there, but what is desired is more...and more...and more.

No one attuned to The Understanding desires anything, wants more, or seeks to accumulate rather than de-accumulate. The "Law of Attraction's" promises run counter to the Advaita teachings in every way.

Next, what did Maharaj have to say about the source of thoughts - the "mind"? Knowing that those seekers moving onto the second of seven steps along the "path" to Realization could not "fast-forward" and grasp the teachings about "no-mind," he did speak to some moving through that second step at a slower rate about "the purified mind," "the perfection of the mind," and "the private mind";

however, for those ready for the teachings that might be grasped by the seekers that have moved farther into the second step understanding, he spoke of "the variable mind," "the superficial mind," and eventually, "no mind," saying, "I have no mind of my own."

But for the billions who do have a mind - a mind that is susceptible to being manipulated because it was programmed and conditioned early on to think in magical ways - how would the notion of "The Law of Attraction" work?

A thought arises in a mind. How exactly is that thought supposed to reach the nether regions and settle into some exact place, into some (supposedly) specific place in "the universe," where dreams are made real and wishes are granted?

For wishes and dreams and desires to move from a mind and into the universe, and then for those wishes and dreams and desires to manifest in what is called "this world," there would have to be some central sorting area where the wishes expressed as thoughts on a tiny planet in the vast universe are collected, acknowledged, processed, and then sent back to the planet for implementation.

That assumes that there is some sort of giant, celestial Bulk Request Center where some all-knowing and all-powerful force sorts the extraterrestrial "thought mail," finds everything that is being sought from persons on the third rock from a sun in a tiny region of the universe,

and sets into motion a process by which any mind that is used properly - that is, in the manner revealed to persons who are willing to pay the $5,000.00 fee for proper-use-of-the-mind instructions - can guarantee that whatever is wished for will come into being.

Louise recently heard the following happen in Cape Town: two teen males decided to call the toll-free number of an evangelist with a radio show. On the show, he takes calls from people seeking divine intervention to solve their relative existence problems. He claims to be the link between those who have their selfish or foolish phenomenal desires and some noumenal power that can make their relative existence dreams and wishes come true.

The lads fabricated a story about an accident that caused a brother to lose his leg and wanted some means by which the leg could grow back to its original form. What was in the formulaic recipe offered up by the evangelist?

The plan offered was to combine one part prayer with one part faith. "Ask and you shall receive," as two billion Christians are told regularly. The teen caller: "And that can make his leg grow back?" The evangelist: "Most definitely, if you truly believe."

The notion that you can ask some supernatural power or force for something and receive it is at least 5000 years old. The pagans who killed virgins as a sacrifice to a Rain God and asked that, in return, their crops receive watering were no different from the people in the 1900's who taught the concept of "the power of positive thinking";

furthermore, none of those beliefs are any different from the ones being sold by charlatans today who are charging $5,000.00 per person to teach persons how to make the "Law of Attraction" work the same way and bring to them whatever they desire.

They claim to be able to show you how you do not even have to pray, do not even have to utter a word, but "need only use your properly-trained mind (which they will train for their fee) to send the right type of thought out into the universe" which will in turn guarantee that your wishes will be granted, in abundance.

How different is that, really, from Jiminy Cricket's claim that "When you wish upon a star, Makes no difference who you are, Anything your heart desires will come to you."

Was the talking cricket's plan a silly claim? In comparison to the control-and-power-seekers who are paying thousands of dollars to be taught how to use the "mind" (a.k.a., the storehouse of all lies and false beliefs) in order to control "the universe" or some "force of the universe" that can make each of their selfish wishes come true?

Not the least bit silly at all in comparison, but just as silly as blaming "karma" or "destiny" for what happens or does not happen. [Example: "The negative karma of the people of New Orleans caused Hurricane Katrina to destroy that city."—The Dalai Lama.] What did Maharaj have to say in that regard?

Questioner: "Is it destiny that ordains?"

Maharaj: "Calling it destiny explains little. When it happens you cannot say why it happens and you merely cover up your ignorance by calling it karma or Grace, or the Will of God."

Or "the power of the mind tapping into the power of the universe."

If one were to understand that everything that happens merely happens spontaneously, including the manifesting and the un-manifesting, then where in that understanding would there be room for a belief in some magical cause or causer; or a belief in some supernatural cause or causer;

or any chance at all for any sort of "divine intervention"; or any chance at all for any sort of "universe-intervener" that responds to the desire of a fiction-filled, self -absorbed "mind"?

The Twice-Stolen Necklace Murders offers the non-duality message by way of a mystery-adventure novel, discussing the movement from pain to healing to awakening to peace.
From Dr. R.F. Maley, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus and former Head of the Department of Psychology, University of Houston: "Floyd Henderson's book, The Twice-Stolen Necklace Murders, is a fun read and an interesting mystery, but perhaps more importantly it serves as a vehicle for blending Eastern Philosophy and Native American Spirituality to make an intellectually challenging novel. The book's insights into both relationships and authoritarian conditioning of people in our society make it a must read, tracing the roots of narcissistic, sociopathic and psychopathic behaviors to the very core of the culture. This truly witty and politically-incorrect study of the aggressive nature of 'the American character' offers not only a diagnosis but also a treatment plan, making the book an excellent supplemental reading in courses such as psychology, anthropology, philosophy, sociology and counseling."
